A scale and polish is a quick and easy way to remove plaque and calculus, reducing your child’s risk of dental problems later on.

Dental plaque is a sticky, colourless or pale yellow film containing bacteria that is constantly forming on your teeth. The bacteria harboured in the plaque, feed on sugars in our food and releases acid which leads to tooth decay, gum disease and eventually cardiac disease. Over time the plaque absorbs calcium from our saliva and forms calculus, a hard substance that cannot be brushed off using a regular tooth brush.

 

The scale and polish involves the gentle use of instruments to remove  plaque and built-up calculus and then the teeth are polished smooth to prevent bacteria-filled plaque from building up and causing tooth decay and gum disease. 

It is a quick and painless procedure, and a great way to introduce your child to some of the dental instruments in a relaxed and fun way!
